Nourishing Traditions Giveaway

Posted on December 19, 2013 by Amanda Holliday | 0 Comments

Last week we announced that we are committing to the Real Food lifestyle by living, breathing and of course eating Real Foods for the next 100 days. And this week we are still going strong—sharing all of our favorite Real Food recipes

Today we want to share a book that is a classic in the Real Foods movement. Written by Sally Fallon Morell, co-founder and president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, Nourishing Traditions is an incredible resource. Part cookbook, part food encyclopedia, it's filled with hundreds of recipes from around the world, plus food research, meal plans, quotes, commentary from nutrition experts, food stories, and history of specific ingredients and preparations. There's even a special section on feeding babies.

And since you're label readers, you'll also appreciate the sections called Know Your Ingredients, which calls out what's actually in that Hearty Cup 'o Noodles and other popular packaged foods.

Here's a little sample of some of the recipes you'll find inside:

  1. Butternut squash puree (put it in a Little Green Pouch!)
  2. Whole grain banana bread (with the flour soaked in buttermilk to inactivate phytic acid)
  3. Fermented ginger & carrots (it's surprisingly easy to make fermented foods)
  4. Plum sherbet (sweetened with real maple syrup)
  5. Homemade buttermilk (a natural probiotic)
  6. Chicken with sweet and sour sauce (nope, no Red #40 or MSG)

And now, you can win your very own copy of Nourishing Traditions. All you have to do is head over to our Facebook page and comment on the giveaway post. We will choose a winner Friday morning, December 20th.

More wisdom from Nourishing Traditions:

...on healing micronutrients
"Asparagus is a good source of rutin, a substance that prevents small blood vessels from breaking."

...on the wisdom of food traditions
"Our ancestors, and virtually all preindustrialized peoples, soaked or fermented their grains before making them into porridge, bread, cakes and casseroles....[it's important to soak grains because] Untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract and block their absorption."

...on food and culture
"Mark Twain once called cauliflower a 'cabbage with a college education."

And here's a great list of resources from the Weston A. Price foundation

Our Real Food Journey Continues

Posted on December 16, 2013 by Amanda Holliday | 0 Comments

We’re now in week two of our 100 Days of Real Food initiative. We hope you’re on board! The time is nigh to provide a little inspiration (and motivation?) by letting you know where to find great Real Food Pouch Recipes.

First, we’ll go ahead and toot our own horn, and point you to our Real Food Pouch Recipes page, which is a fantastic resource for tasty (and easy) Real Food recipes. There you’ll find Real Food Pouch Recipes like Roasted Apple and Parsnip Puree (with an awesome instructional video), Baked Quinoa e Fagioli with Veggies, Homemade Yogurt (in a Crockpot!) Spiced Up Yams and Broccoli and Carrot and Nectarine Smoothie. These and other Real Food Pouch Recipes are tagged as Real Food, for your convenience, and stamped with our handy Real Food Badge.

Next (horn toot number two), on our new Real Food Pinterest Board you can find a great collection of Real Food Pouch Recipes that meet our Real Food (and tasty) standards. Make sure to follow along. (We apologize in advance if you spend two hours in the “Pinterest Time Suck” after taking a peek at our new board (Melissa is probably there as we speak.))

Finally, we are excited to share a fantastic new Real Food Pouch Recipe from Lauren Kelly, CN (awesome recipe developer, cookbook author, food blogger and nutritionist). Lauren’s put together a Real Food Pouch Recipe that she says “is so easy to prepare, there is no excuse not to make it.” Lauren’s Unsweetened Pear Applesauce in the Slow Cooker is so good that there’s “no turning back after you try this.”

We’ll check in with you next week to see how all is progressing on the Real Food front, and give you a few Real Food Pouch Recipes for the holidays (we can’t believe they are here so soon!).

Happy cooking,

Maggie & Melissa

PS. We’re giving extra credit when you mark your calendar for the 10-Day Real Food Pledge starting January 6th. Let’s do this together!

Our 100 Days of Real Food Give-away

Posted on December 10, 2013 by Amanda Holliday | 2 Comments

*UPDATE: While this giveaway has ended and the winner selected, our Real Food journey will continue through March 2014. We hope you will join in with us. We are sharing a ton of Real Food recipes, hosting giveaway and taking the 10 Day Pledge.

At Little Green Pouch, we’re committed to helping families embrace an active and healthy lifestyle. And although we hate to use the “D Word,” we all know diet is a big part of a healthy life. Believe it or not, experts find that a diet low in, or free of, ingredients found in processed foods (like, say, ammonia (we’re serious!), BPA (more on that later) and sand (really?!)) can significantly improve your health and extend your life.

A longer, healthier and ammonia-free life sounds great, right? (Personally, I prefer to enjoy sand at the beach, and not in my soup or coffee creamer.) But where does one start? Well, there’s no better place than 100 Days Of Real Food, a great website with a healthy (pun intended) amount of information for cutting processed food out of your life, and doing so successfully. There you’ll find a handy list of rules (defining “real food,” in case you’re still wondering), research as to why you should cut out processed food, and Real Food Tips to help you get it done.

100 Days of Real Food got the Little Green Pouch team motivated, and we’ve decided we’re up for the Real Food challenge. For 100 Days, we will be living, breathing and of course eating Real Foods.

Starting things off with a bang: our 100 Days Of Real Food Give-Away, where we’re giving away a Vitamix, to puree all our awesome Real Food Recipes, and our Large Starter Kit, to prep Real Food and take it to go.

100 days of real food giveaway

We’ll also be sharing dozens of new Real Food Recipes, from our test kitchen and those of other chefs and nutritionists. We’ll add to that guest posts from Real Foodies.

And finally, we’re promoting and supporting a 10-Day Real Food Pledge in the Little Green Pouch community, kicking off on January 6. Are you up for it? Join us. Come on, it’s only 10 days!

We look forward to getting healthy with you, and your families. Now let’s get cooking!

-Maggie & Melissa
